The Seven Basic Principles of Co-ops

1. Open membership: Membership in a co-op is voluntary and open to anyone regardless of race, sex, religion, political affiliation, sexual orientation, or social standing.
2. Democratic control: A co-op is operated under the principle of one person, one vote.
3. Limited return on investment: Capitalization in the cooperative earns little or no interest. This avoids speculation.
4. Return of profits to members: Profits are reinvested in the co-op so it can better serve its members.
5. Continuous education: Members learn the techniques and principles of cooperation and pass the word along.
6. Cooperation among co-ops: Co-ops actively support other cooperatives at the local, regional, state, national, and international levels.
7. Concern for the community: Cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies accepted by their members.
